Scout trip planning Canaan to Gilman

Question. River miles on CRP Trail map equals 70 miles (mile 38 to mile 108). The posted trip summary “suggested trips” states ~ 55 miles? Please clarify.
We are planning 50 mi trip w/scouts.

Thanks, bill

Hi Bill,
I've updated the "recommended trip" listing with corrected river miles - it is indeed more like a 65-70 mile trip. If you want a ~50 day trip, end in Guildhall (or start in Colebrook).

Is there trail from Holbrook campsite to mt monadnock?

Thx, Bill

Hi Bill, You can walk out to the road, then along the road about 1 1/3 miles north to a gravel pit. The trail is accessed from there. So a bit of a trip. Alternatively, you can land at the Colebrook Bridge, which is just 250 yards south of the trailhead. It is a great hike with rewarding views!

Is there camping right at Colebrook/trailhead?

Thx, Bill

The trail head is a gravel quarry. You could camp up the road at Norm's Access. This is an unofficial campsite but the landowner has permitted camping for college groups looking to climbing Monadnock while on the river, with advance permission. Norm's number is (802) 277-9801

I'm one of the other leaders on this trip. The troop has aluminum canoes, but we are looking to augment with others. What types of canoes are appropriate for this section of the river? Would we badly beat up fiberglass or wood canoes?

It really depends on water levels, how heavily loaded your boats are, and how good the troop is at reading the water. If it stays dry than you should expect to scrape bottom in a few spots.

Hi Noah, et al. If we filter (Katahdin) river water-is it safe for drinking?
This is what we did on Delaware river last year and it was fine...
Thx, Bill
