Take Action For Your River

Each October, sewage treatment plants north of Old Saybrook are no longer required to disinfect wastewater until May of the following year.

We know that river users stay active on the rivers well into October and get out on rivers each spring before disinfection begins in May. We need a longer disinfection period in Connecticut. So what can be done about it?

CT Paddlers Trail Partner Connecticut River Conservancy is working with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to extend the disinfection period to at least match the disinfection season of our neighbors in Massachusetts: November 1 – April 1. That’s 60 more days of cleaner waters for you and our river friends.

In order to push for this change, we need your help documenting human use of the river from November through April. Please send to CRC (crc@ctriver.org)
• Online and newspaper clippings of regattas, fishing competitions or any organized activities on the river.•
• Photos of others using the river with the date and location
• Photos of yourself out on the river with the date and location

Thank you!
